What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a mineral, mined in the earth. It came mainly from South Africa, Canada, and Russia. Asbestos can no longer be brought into the UK, but there is an enormous amount here already.

It consists of very small fibres, so small you cannot see them in some cases. It is resistant to heat and chemicals. It is a good insulator, for heat and noise.

The three main types of asbestos are blue (crocidolite), brown (amosite), and white (chrysotile). All 3 were used in the UK. All 3 have caused mesothelioma.

Blue and brown asbestos are more potent causes of mesothelioma, because the fibres are straight and needle-like. They can get to the pleura, and are difficult for the body to expel.

White asbestos fibres are slightly curly, do not reach the pleura as easily, and are easier for the body to clear and defend itself against.

If you have been exposed to asbestos at work, you are not likely to know which type you have worked with. It may well have been a combination of all three types.
